We needed to get a dehumidifier as we'd moved in to a new-build property (which take time to fully dry out) and with winter setting in we we're getting loads of condensation on windows. After several months of ignoring the problem and foolishly hoping it would get better on it's own, we discovered loads of patches of mould inside cupboards, on the back of sofas etc. I looked at lots of reviews and saw that this one was the Which? Best Buy - I've always had a lot of success with buying their best buys in the past so I thought I give this one a go. All I can say is - amazing! It sucks so much moisure out of the air - we empty the tank (which is large), every 36-48 hours! It has completely solved our condensation and mould problems. The best feature is that you just plug it in, turn it on and leave it - it turns itself off and on as needed. Apart from emptying the tank you don't have to think about it (and it turns itself off automatically if the tank gets full and you're not there to empty it). The tank emptied really easily - it simply slides out the front - see photo. We live in a 3-bedroom, 1300sqft house, across two floors - we simply leave it in the middle of the landing downstairs, with all the internal doors open on both floors and it services the whole house without ever having to move it. It is heavyish (although I can easily carry it upstairs - I'm only little!) but is on wheels so easily rolls from room to room if you do ever want to move it. It's pricier than many other models but I my view, well worth the money. Top performer!

Worth every penny, i live in a bungalow which is plagued with black mold on ceiling lines especially in the bathroom despite ventilation. We cleaned it all off with black mold remover prior to buying this and not one spec has returned. We bought an Hygrometer just to see what the reading was before switching the Meaco on and it went off the scale, 2 weeks later with this running and we are in the comfort zone. The amount of water this thing pulls out of the air in the first few weeks is shocking and the difference it makes is amazing, no more mold, no more coughing and the heating rarely turns on now the cold damp air has gone which i`m sure will save more money in the long run.So impressed with the results my neighbor has now bought one too, he suffers from COPD and say`s the results after a few weeks are truly miraculous.

A tad noisy but one of the best buys I have made - reducing the need to switch the heating on - its the damp rather than the ambient air temperature that makes cold days feel cold in the house. Also great for drying wet gear (I have a house full of all weather cyclists, a dog that comes in dripping wet, and all my motorcycle kit...and that's beside standard washing). I might just see if I can find a quieter model next time round. On the negative side the push buttons are a one peice plastic film, but the layers have become delaminated on the on off switch so it looks like shrivelled skin when you've been in the bath too long... that's a bit poor IMHO, I have all sorts of other things in the kitchen, microwave that gets far more button pushing and that doesn't suffer from this.

A feature on the Which? Best Buy list for the past few years, the Meaco 20L is viewed by many as one of the best dehumidifiers on the market, and it excels in a range of categories, including energy efficiency, water extraction, noise, and ease of use.

Being a refrigerant dehumidifier, the Meaco 20L is best suited for home temperatures, but unlike many of its peers, it’s also useful at lower temperatures, which means it can also be used in colder rooms such as garages and basements.

At 39x62x29cm and weighing 13.7kg, the dehumidifier is one of the bulkier units on the list, which is something you’ll have to consider if you have a smaller home. That said, it does feature a carry handle, so it’s easier to move from room to room should you need to.

A relatively quiet dehumidifier compared to similarly sized models, the unit is excellent for use in bedrooms or environments that necessitate a little peace — but it can reach 45dB on specific settings, so bear that in mind.

With an energy rating of A+, the unit is one of the most energy-efficient models on the market, which is great if you’re looking to invest in low-energy technology that will remove damp or mold from your home.

With a range of excellent features at hand, the Meaco 20L offers touch controls alongside digital displays that are easy to navigate and provide clear insights into the operations being performed.

There’s also a handy automatic timer that allows you to set the dehumidifier to operate on a time that suits you, meaning that you can plan its operation up to 24 hours in advance.

A continuous drainage feature also means that you don’t have to spend your days replacing the trays, although being that it packs a 20-litre tank, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

As an extra feature, the unit also has a HEPA filter, which can help reduce allergens in your home. This is a great little addition for those that have asthma or other conditions, although it’s worth noting that you’ll have to buy extra filters separately.

Read: Our Guide to Living with and Treating Asthma

In conclusion, we do not doubt that the Meaco 20L is one of the best dehumidifiers on the market, and given its impressive array of features and the fact that it’s so easy to use, it’s probably going to remain at the top for some time.

The only downside is, of course, its size, which means that it might not be suitable for larger homes. If you’re searching for a dehumidifier for a small environment, it’s probably worth looking at one of the smaller units on our list.

This is a great piece of kit....I bought this dehumidifier to use in my conservatory due to finding wet windows / roof and damp on wallsI never noticed this wetness in years gone by but this year especially the windows and roof were wet and very coldafter reading so many reviews, tips and tricks I opted to give this a go and wow it does not disappoint at allYes it's expensive but I think for what it is achieving it's worth itwater and wetness gone and the extra bit of heat is also a good thingtime will tell on longjevertybut as of now very impressed and working well

This dehumidifier is simply one of the best ! Its quiet in operation and the amount of water it draws out of the air is nothing short of Impressive. It has a wide range of excellent features such as Laundry Mode, Various Fan Speeds, Timer for On and Off operation with built in clock. The unit can also be permanently plumbed into a drain, which eliminates the need to keep emptying the internal tank. Support from Meaco has also been excellent, my query to them was answered within a couple of hours. If you are looking for a decent dehumidifier, then in my humble opinion, this is the one to go for, very pleased.

I've only had this 5 days but already I see a huge difference. This is my third dehumidifier and this is without a doubt the best. Even with all fans on the noise level is low compared to my previous appliances. It's attractive and sleek and fits in with any decor. Most importantly it gets to work fast to remove the excess humidity. Very simple to use. Definitely worth the extra!

Similarly to the Meaco 20L, the DDL8 Zambezi is viewed by many as one of the best on the market, excelling in a range of priority areas, such as energy-efficiency and ease of use.

The model is a desiccant dehumidifier, which means that it can work in colder conditions, as well as those that you find in your average home. That said, however, you shouldn’t use it in freezing conditions, although it can extract moisture from the air in your bedroom, just as well as it can in your garage.

Served with an A energy rating, the DD8L is one of the more energy efficient models, which means you can get the results you need without having to shell out large sums when the bills land on your doorstep.

One of the smaller units on our list, at 36x20x55cm, it weighs just 8kg, which could make it more convenient than the Meaco 20L.
Like the above, it also comes with a handle on the top, which means it can be easily moved around the house.

Featuring a simple digital display alongside convenient electronic controls, operating the DD8L is a dream, and the unique Meaco control logic means you can maintain a chosen humidity level.

What’s more, you can set it to monitor the room every 30 minutes to maintain your desired level; a bonus if you’re looking to save on electricity bills.

If a member of your family happens to suffer from asthma, the unit comes complete with ionizer and anti-bacterial features to keep the air clean and reduce irritants such as mold spores.

Read: Our Guide to Living with and Treating Asthma

Although the filter doesn’t need replacing, you will need to clean it every two weeks. Able to hold three litres of water in the tank, you can avoid using the continuous drain facility, so you don’t have to remove the water trays every time it gets full.

All you need to do is attach a hose to the unit and ensure it leads to a low-level drain outlet or a sink.

Indeed, the DD8L Zambezi is a great compact dehumidifier, which is great for extracting water and as previously mentioned, is so easy to operate, making it a worthy addition to any shopping list.

Proved unreliable. When new it frequently cut out with flashing error light as the water wasn't draining correctly into the internal tank so I switched to using the drain hose. This then worked fine for about a year, only getting an error a few times, cured by switching off and on again. Then the fan stopped working causing it to overheat and cut out. Managed to manually get the fan spinning again by poking it and left it on high as the manual suggests to ensure lubrication, but happened again a few times since. Now finally it no longer works on the low setting, as the heating element seems to have developed a fault, so will only work on high. Hopefully I can get through the winter with it then I will try another brand and replace it. When it works it is quiet, efficient and very effective, but poor value for money due to reliability.

I have been using this produce for a while now and now feel I can give honest feedback about it.My house suffers from 'condensation damp' since new Double Glazing was installed a few years ago, painting over it was ok for a while until we got to late Autumn/Winter when drying clothes in the house was needed and so the mould would reappear...until now!I live in a large 3 Bed Detached house and as long as the Dehumidifier is positioned in the correct place (bottom of the stairs) it will clear the whole house of condensation so no more wet window sills in the morning! It did take about 4 weeks on continuous 24 hours a day full power use to get the house down to normal humid levels but since then it just works when it needs to (in fact we are surprised when it does need to work now).Leaving it switched on 24 hours a day it 'scans' the air every hour for a few minutes and then 'decides' if it needs to be brought in to action, if not then it goes back to 'sleep' until the next 'scan' happens. It has a few settings but the main ones are 'full power' which is advised to be used when first bought and will switch off when the house is 40% humidity, a 'standard' setting-this will bring the house to around 50% humidity which is correct for this Country then switch off and a setting which is for drying clothes in the house; this can be timer set too.Overall, a brilliant piece of kit which is better than expected!

Outstanding! Collects way more water than our Ebac refrigerant type unit and warms the area as well. Very light but appears well made. Ended up trying it in the garage and it was so effective it's still there. Keeps temp to between 5 and 10C regardless of how much it's freezing outside and everything lovely and dry so no rust.

By far one of the most compact and lightest dehumidifiers on this list, the Meaco Junior DD8L can operate in temperatures both hot and cold and takes up very little space when in operation.

One of the most effective dehumidifiers for a unit of this size, being a desiccant humidifier, it can extract moisture from cold environments such as conservatories or garages. That said, do not use it in freezing conditions, as it is likely to freeze up and break.
Weighing only 6.2kg and measuring a mere 18x35x50cm, the Junior DD8L is one of the lightest and compact dehumidifiers on the market, making it easy to transport around the house.

Sitting in the middle ground when it concerns energy efficiency, being neither tremendous nor horrific, if you’re looking to save on running costs, the Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier might be a better model for you.

Similarly, neither is it one of the quietest dehumidifiers, which means that if you’re looking for a quiet model, you might want to check out the Junior DD8L. That said, if you’re looking to utilize the unit in a garage or conservatory, this shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

Another slight is the fact that the water tank only holds up to two litres, so you’ll need to set up the continuous drainage feature to avoid emptying it throughout the day. A bonus, however, is the fact that it comes with a wall mounted bracket so that it won’t be in the way during operation.

Also featuring Meaco control logic, the unit can monitor humidity levels in the room every 30 minutes so that you can maintain the desired level. It also features an auto-restart function and electronic controls, so it’s just as easy to use as any other dehumidifier mentioned so far.

A strong contender for those looking for a small dehumidifier for a garage, conservatory, or outhouse, the Meaco Junior DD8L is worth looking into if noise or energy efficiency isn’t a great concern.

This review is based on my having used this product for just one week. The longevity value of this product remains to be seen.My initial experience with this product is nothing less then superb. First, the product arrived quickly and was well packed. It is a very sturdy and attractive dehumidifier and air purifier. I am talking top quality here. It has built in casters and a handle which makes manueuvering quick and easy. Operation is straight foward, easy, and user friendly. In the first day my machine quickly pulled 15 liters of moisture out of my large bedroom with ensuite. That not only proves how well the dehumidifier works but shows just how badly this product was needed.Thank God for the 20 liter tank with automatic shut off.The “smart mode” on this dehumidifier is a perfect setting for normal operations to dehumidify and air purify at a normal healthy levels. It eliminates all manner of damp but ensures it doesn’t dry out the air either. The quick option will suck out a sudden influx of humidity in a hurry. For someone with respitory health issues this product is marvelous. If you have asthma or COPD this product will greatly improve your quality of life. I suffer from both so I speak from experience. The fact that this product includes a very good air purifier that can operate with or independently of the Dehumidifier is a huge bonus. It is the only product like this that performs both functions that I am aware of. Moreover, it performs both functions exceedingly well. This is indeed a pricey product but oh is it ever worth it. One truly gets their money’s worth with this product and then some. I love the large 20 liter tank that is so quick and easy to empty. It also has a tube for those who prefer automatic draining. This is a genuinely top quality product that is second to none. It is arguably the best of the best and I for one am delighted that I bought mine which is in use constantly . I highly recommend this product.

Very pleased, works quietly and efficiently. The electricity bill doesn't seem to have taken a beating either. I bought this to replace an older / budget dehumidifier that packed up after a year. The price isn't cheap but it's definitely value for money. If you have a condensation and / or mould problem then this product will definitely improve that situation for you.

Drops the humidity from 70% to 50% in a few hours.Water tank fills up quickly but I'm pretty sure that's just because there's so much humidity for it to deal with.

For those needing to extract a lot of water in a short space of time, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 should be high on the shopping list.

A Which? Best Buy model since May 2017, this unit is one of the best refrigerant dehumidifiers on the market and works better in warmer and humid environments, which is perfect for most UK or US heated homes.

Being able to extract 20 litres of water based on 30°C and 80% humidity over a 24-hour period, the model can be used for those that need to remove as much moisture as possible in a short period.

That said, it’s worth remembering that the model becomes less efficient at temperatures below 10°C.

With a three-litre tank, the unit would easily suit a five-bedroom house but would need emptying on a regular basis if left on for an entire day. If you don’t fancy such a task, there is also a continuous drainage feature ready if you have a low-level drain.

Compared to other models of this size, the CD20LE-V2 is relatively energy efficient and uses a maximum of 240 watts when running. There is also a range of energy reducing features that are worth investigating, including a humidistat, energy efficient compressor, and frost watch, which are all designed to reduce running costs.

At 42dB, the unit is about right on its noise levels, as there are certainly noisier models on the market, although it might cause small amounts of irritability among family members who pick up on noisy electrical appliances.

One of the bigger units at 42x64x29cm, the CD20LE-V2 is also heavy at 14kg, although it does come with both wheels and a handle so that you can move it around the house.

Just like many dehumidifiers on this list, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 comes with a variety of helpful features, including a laundry mode to dry clothes for those who do not have a tumble dryer in their home.

As you may have already gathered, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 dehumidifier is an excellent choice for those who want to extract moisture quickly from a large heated home.

De’Longhi DDS25 Dehumidifier

£400.67

De longhi deumidif. dds25 25lt purificat. tank 4, 5l, electronic cont

Available: In stock
amazon amazon.co.uk

A champion of the market, the De’Longhi DDS25 was given the Best Buy label by Which? and has kept it since November 2017.

Being a refrigerant dehumidifier, the unit is more efficient in warmer environments and can suck 25 litres of water from the air in as little as four hours (based on 30°C and 80% humidity).

Even at cooler temperatures, the DDS25 is likely to be able to extract ample amounts of water from the air without issue.
Like many other dehumidifiers, the unit has many features that can help reduce running expenses, and will already cost less to run than a desiccant model.

On the scales at 15kg, the DDS25 is undoubtedly one of the weightier models on the market and isn’t quite as portable as others on the list. That said, it does come with wheels and a handle, though you would want to be careful around stairs.

At its noisiest, the machine can pitch in at 50dB and this only drops by 5dB on its lowest settings, so this is certainly something that you should bear in mind if you happen to have a smaller home (or young children).

Although a little loud on the ears, if you don’t mind, the De’Longhi certainly makes up for it with features, including an anti-bacterial filter and an electronic timer. Another bonus is the fact that it comes packed with a four-litre tank, so it won’t need to be emptied as frequently.
Like many dehumidifiers on this list, the unit also comes with a continuous drainage feature, although a separate drainage unit will have to be bought.

For those with larger homes, this is unquestionably a model that’s worth considering. Excelling across the board, including in water extraction and energy efficiency, this is certainly a unit that’s at the top of its game if you don’t mind the noise.

A tiny unit that packs a lot of punch, the Meaco Junior DD8L is the perfect unit for those with a small house or apartment, and its size means that you can take it anywhere.

Although it is indeed compact, that does not mean that it does not come without features, as there is a range of settings and energy efficiency savings to be had.

What’s more, it’s been marked as one of the top energy-saving dehumidifiers since it uses a mere 1/6th of the power of other desiccant dehumidifiers.

Used by many for its compact physique and high capacity, the unit is also easy to set, and your preferences can be saved for later use.
Highly portable, the Meaco also comes with a clean anti-bacterial filter, and the ionizer can be used to dispel toxins and pollen.

For those that need a portable dehumidifier for small homes, caravans or mobile homes, there probably isn’t a more suitable dehumidifier than the Meaco Junior DD8L.

The Best Large Dehumidifier in 2018

De’Longhi DDS25 Dehumidifier

One of the biggest units on the market, the De’Longhi DDS25 has been able to use the Which? Best Buy label since 2017 and is considered by many to be the godfather of large dehumidifiers.

Being a refrigerant dehumidifier, the DDS25 is more suited to warmer temperatures and can consume 25 litres of water in the air in as little as 24-hours based on a temperature of 30°C and 80% humidity.

The unit can, of course, work reasonably efficiently in lower temperatures, though its ability will be reduced considerably below 15°C.
Its tank also holds a large 4.5 litres, making it one of the largest domestic models on the market. That said, it does lose out on noise, with an output of 45dB being its lowest setting.

It is also reasonably efficient for its size, and it comes with many features which allows you to tweak its energy efficiency. Being that it is a refrigerant dehumidifier, however, it will already be cheaper to run than a desiccant model.

A heavy boy, the DDS25 weighs 15kg, which makes it also one of the heaviest on the market, although it does come with a handle and a handy set of wheels so it can be easily transported around the house.

For those that don’t want to be continually emptying the water tank, however, its four-litre capacity means that it does not have to be frequently emptied and the unit can be connected to a low-level drain; perfect for if you don’t want to empty the tank at all.

That said, a separate drainage kit will need to be purchased separately.

For those that are searching for the largest possible domestic dehumidifier for their home, then this is absolutely the model you should consider the most. Surpassing all others in both water extraction and energy efficiency, there isn’t another similarly sized model on the market that comes close.

November 25, 2017

Packed with a range of features, the Meaco 20L is viewed by experts as one of the best refrigerant dehumidifiers on the market, and few claim otherwise. Excelling in energy efficiency, water extraction, and noise, the unit is a regular face on the Which? Best Buy list.

Unlike other dehumidifiers, the model is also useful at lower temperatures, which means it can be used in rooms that are not heated, despite being designed (ideally) for warmer temperatures and household humidities.

The unit also comes complete with wheels and a carry handle, which is particularly handy being that it measures 39x62x29cm and weighs in at 13.7kg. Being a slightly larger humidifier, this should be a consideration if you’re looking to use it in a smaller home.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that although relatively quiet, the unit can sometimes reach 45dB, which means it might not be great for night time use.

That said, we find the model with an energy rating of A+, which means that it is one of the most energy-efficient models on the market; great for those not looking to go overboard on their bills.

Considering it is a low energy humidifier, the Meaco 20L also comes with a smart array of features for ease of use, including touch controls and a digital display so that you can cycle through your settings. What’s more, an automatic timer allows users to switch the unit off for up to 24-hours, which means that you can get on with your life without being inhibited by the machine.

There’s also a continuous drainage feature, which means there won’t be much time spent replacing the trays, although being that there’s a six-litre tank in tow, there shouldn’t be much of an issue around this anyway.

For those that are looking for a dehumidifier to help with conditions such as asthma, the unit also comes with a HEPA filter, which can help minimize allergens in the air, although you’ll have to buy them separately.

With all this into consideration, we do not doubt that the Meaco 20L is one of the best dehumidifiers on the market, a position helped by its array of impressive features and easy setup.

A dehumidifier that excels more than any other desiccant dehumidifier at lower temperatures, the DD8L should be a strong consideration for those looking to extract moisture at colder room temperatures quickly.

Although it shouldn’t be used in freezing temperatures, it is well suited for conservatories, garages, outhouses, and similar environments.
What’s more, with a Class A energy efficiency rating, it is also one of the cheapest desiccant dehumidifiers that can run without compromising its working ability.

At just 8kg and operating at 36x20x55cm, the model is also one of the smallest on the market, which is incredible when you consider the sheer volume of moisture that it can extract.

With a simple digital display and control unit, the DD8L offers users the ability to maintain humidity levels, as well as monitor them every 30 minutes; a great feature for when you’re looking to save electricity.

Able to hold three litres of water, the model comes with a convenient continuous drain unit, which means that you don’t have to empty the drains every few hours, which is another bonus if you have a low-level drain on your property.

When it comes to product features or cooler environments, we’d doubt that you’d be able to source a better model than the Meaco DD8L Zambezi.

What is a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air. You typically find it in the household appliance category. They are wonderful additions to homes that are located in humid areas or for those who want to purify the air in their home from allergens. Small living spaces that have limited ways of venting moisture and tend to grow mold also need a dehumidifier.

Why should I get a dehumidifier?

There are a few people who benefit from dehumidifiers more than others. There may also be a basement or small living space that requires a dehumidifier to avoid excess moisture and mold. These are some common reasons that consumers are picking up dehumidifiers based on their reviews online.

Allergies

Hands down, the number one reason that people use a dehumidifier is to draw out moisture and filter the air from allergies with hypoallergenic filters. Dehumidifiers are known for their ability to remove moisture that causes common allergens to pop like mold, mildew, dust mites, and other microscopic allergens that can breed in a humid environment.

Small, Poorly Ventilated Spaces

Small apartments, basement apartments, and other living spaces where moisture thrives also need ventilation. Dehumidifiers are small and can fit in a corner of the room, drawing out moisture from the air and preventing mold from growing in places that aren’t ventilated well. Many homes have a humidifier built into their basement for this very reason.

Reduce Odors

If you want your air to be purified and get rid of smells, a dehumidifier can help, especially if there is mold problems. You can use this device to ventilate spaces that are prone to odors as well, such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and basements.

Water Stains

If you notice that you are getting water stains on the ceiling or walls, then you probably have a lot of moisture in the air. Rooms with higher humidity may start to show water stains. With proper ventilation, you can prevent these types of water stains in the future.

Children with Asthma

It’s no secret that allergens and air pollutants can cause problems for children with breathing issues. If you have a child with asthma, you will likely also have a dehumidifier to help with the air quality.

Read: Our Guide to Living with and Treating Asthma

What type of dehumidifier do you need?

Selecting the right dehumidifier should be based on what method works best for your home and needs. The above process defines a refrigerant style of dehumidification. However, there actually three ways that a dehumidifier can pull moisture out of the air. In general, the performance is the same with a few caveats.

Refrigerant (Compressor) Dehumidifiers

These machines have been around for over 40 years. The humidifier has cold coils or a cool surface inside that helps condense the moisture from the outside that the fan is pulling into the dehumidifier. Compressor dehumidifiers are more popular, and they work pretty well in almost any type of home.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers

These do not use compression or a cold surface. Instead, desiccant dehumidifiers have a wheel that absorbs the moisture from the air, just like a sponge would absorb water. There is a heater on the inside so that the process can continue again and again.

Consumers today are split on the best dehumidifier, but the desiccant dehumidifier is a more modern way to remove moisture from the air in your home. These are quieter typically, and they work with homes that are typically kept at temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. This is an important factor as the inside of the dehumidifier can be close to freezing at times.

What else should you consider before you buy?

There are many reasons why one dehumidifier will work better for your home over another. For example, you may want a machine that is quiet and small, fitting inconspicuously in the corner of your small apartment. However, you may also have pets or want higher energy efficiency, all of these factors play into the right dehumidifier. These are a few things to look out for as you start to shop for different brands and models.

  • Extraction rate
  • Energy efficiency
  • Noise
  • Capacity
  • Size of dehumidifier
  • Temperature of home

You should think about where the dehumidifier will be situated in the home and whether or not the noise will play a factor in watching television or movies. If you have an entertainment area in your basement, you may want a quieter machine that can be nearly silently running in the background.

It’s important to think about the square footage and capacity of your home. If you know that you have an extremely wet area that displays signs of water stains, then you may want a higher capacity unit or at least one that can put out 20 litres a day.

Special Features

You really have to know what you are buying is going to work in this day and age. As these devices are designed to extract excess vapor in your air, you’ll need more strength and higher capacity in certain machines depending on the size of the area that you want to ventilate. There are a few other features that you should look out for as well.

Pint Capacity

Pint capacity refers to how much moisture can be pulled out from the air during the dehumidifier run. If you want to be able to continuously run the dehumidifier, then you need to match the capacity with space. There are some dehumidifiers that have a capacity of 70 pints, which is great for a house. If you are ventilating a larger area such as a commercial building, then you are looking at an industrial size capacity.

Container Size

You don’t want to be changing the container every 10 minutes with a dehumidifier. While the dehumidifier should stop when the container gets too full, it can be cumbersome to change the container and turn on the dehumidifier again to find that it still needs to run.

Electronic vs. Manual

The smart home appliances are here. There are a number of options out there, so it’s best to pick a dehumidifier that can run when you set it on a schedule or can be accessed from your phone. There are also cheaper, manual dehumidifiers that work about the same but have much less capabilities.

Humidistat

Dehumidifiers have to have a thermometer, so to speak, that measures the temperature of the air and determines how much moisture that needs to be removed. The dehumidifier should be able to adapt to any setting.

Auto-Defrost and Temperature Features

Dehumidifiers can get pretty chilly. This means that you need an auto-defrost feature in cost your dehumidifier starts to freeze up. This can happen when a dehumidifier can’t handle colder indoor temperatures.

Auto-Restart Function

If you need the dehumidifier to run constantly or you are wary of a power interruption, then there are special features like auto-restart that can help you out when you’ve lost power and want to make sure that your air is still being cleansed.

Auto-Shutoff

All dehumidifiers should come with an auto-shutoff today. This allows the machine to determine when the moisture has been removed and is ready to finish its cycle. Once all the water has been collected or the moisture balance has been reached, the dehumidifier should turn off immediately.

Caster Wheels

If you want your dehumidifier to be mobile, then you definitely want it to have a set of wheels so you can roll it do different areas of the home.

Reusable Air Filters

Some dehumidifier models allow you to use reusable filters. These can be cheaper on the wallet, and since you can wash the filter any time, you can contribute to a healthier home without having to go out and purchase a new filter whenever the old one gets too dirty.

What types of capacity are there?

For your typical domestic dehumidifier, you will be able to find them on the market for between 0.5 and 20 litres, which serves as an indication of how much water they can hold.

As you can imagine, the best-sized dehumidifier depends on the space of the environment in which you want to use it.

For example, if you are going to use a dehumidifier in a small room, such as a study or a child’s bedroom, you would be best searching for one that is lower in capacity.

However, if you are looking to use a dehumidifier that serves the entire house, you will want to search for one of the larger models.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you know when a dehumidifier is needed?

You probably breathe in thousands and thousands of particles every day. However, your home could be spawning dust and mold spores, as well as toxic chemicals, just because the environment breeds it in the air. There are also commercial facilities that must have a dehumidifier in order to prevent molds, such as gyms and restaurant restrooms. There are a few ways you can tell that your place needs a dehumidifier as well.

Allergens

One of the main reasons that people use dehumidifiers is to get rid of allergens. As most dehumidifiers nowadays also have an air purifier built in, it’s important to get a unit that can do both. Some units also allow you to have a HEPA filter. You can use these filters to prevent allergens from clogging up the air and causing breathing issues.

Moldy Spots

If you are starting to see mold stains in certain areas of your home, such as the basement, bathrooms, or around the ceiling, then you probably have some issues with humidity in your home. Mold appears as little to medium dark patches or spots. Steam is likely rising up from your shower or getting trapped in your home, leading to mold production in certain areas without ventilation.

Condensation

Do you notice that your windows are constantly fogging up and dripping with water? If your windows constantly have beads of water on them, then you could have an issue with too much moisture. Humidity can also pop up any time. It’s important that you get the excess water out of the air as much as possible.

Musty Odors

Dehumidifiers can also help with odors caused by poor ventilation. You may have noticed areas of your home that have a distinct moldy odor or musk. These areas can be quickly corrected and back to smelling like home with a dehumidifier machine. However, you should also take some steps to prevent yourself from dealing with mold. You should have the mold removed and repair any walls or flooring that was damaged by the mold as well.

Preventing Colds and Illnesses

For children with asthma or the elderly, it’s important to keep a clean environment and dust-free air. A lot of allergens can go into the air that causes problems for people who have trouble breathing. Many dehumidifiers also have filters that let you remove most dust, dust mites, and allergens from the air as well.

Read: Our Guide to Living with and Treating Asthma!

Are dehumidifiers safe?

In general, most brands are safe. However, in 2013, some dehumidifiers were recalled due to a defect that caused the machines to catch fire. If you are buying anything else but brand new, you should consider checking the manufacturer’s date on any product of the following brands:

  • Frigidaire
  • Kenmore
  • Danby or Premier
  • De’Longhi or SuperClima
  • Gree
  • Fedders
  • Fellini
  • Norpole
  • Seabreeze
  • Soleus Air

Otherwise, dehumidifiers have features that prevent issues such as auto-turnoff and auto-defrost. You should make sure that these fail-safes are in place to avoid any issues, such as spillage or shortages.

Most models also come with a warranty. It’s important to check out the warranty before you go and purchase any dehumidifier. It can protect you against manufacturer defects and other issues.

How much do dehumidifiers cost?

There are a number of brands out there that have designed discreet, powerful machines that can cost over £100. However, the prize also depends on the quality of the dehumidifier and space size. For example, you can pick up a Frigidaire Energy Star 50-Pint dehumidifier for about £200. If you are purchasing for a commercial space with a large capacity need, such as 250 pints, then you may spend up to £3,000.

You should make sure that any dehumidifier you buy has a warranty and plenty of features as mentioned above so that you get the most value.

Low energy dehumidifiers have built-in fail-safes to automatically turn off the dehumidifier when it finally removes the desired amount of moisture from the air. Most dehumidifiers have energy savings listed on the features list.

How do you use a dehumidifier?

Once that you’ve chosen the right kind of dehumidifier for your home, learning how to operate it properly can be a little daunting and overwhelming, but once you know the basics, getting the most out of your dehumidifier is easy. Get savvy and read our article on how to use a dehumidifier more efficiently.

How many dehumidifiers should you need?

The truth is that you can have as many as you want in the home, but you would not want to create the wrong atmosphere by having too many dehumidifiers and not enough moisture, which is equally a problem as having too much moisture. There are often multiple areas of larger homes that collect moisture and need dehumidification. However, should you have multiple dehumidifiers in your home that are turned on at the same time?

That is an issue of debate for most people who have larger spaces and want to have a dehumidifier in the basement, as well as in the upstairs bathroom. The main belief is that if you need to simultaneously remove humidity in multiple areas that are far apart from one another, then you should use multiple dehumidifiers. If you have a large home with multiple floors and poor ventilation, you may want to get two dehumidifiers to go to different areas. You should look at the capacity levels of the dehumidifier to determine which ones are going to take the most moisture out of the area as well.

How many kWh does a dehumidifier use?

With rising energy costs, most homeowners do not want an extra bill to deal with the moisture in their home. However, you can check a dehumidifier’s settings and features beforehand to ensure that they have a low energy rating.

Dehumidifier energy consumption takes up a fair bit of energy. You typically find that the standard model of dehumidifiers cost 15 pence/kW, which means that it can be calculated down to about 4 pence per hour. If you run the dehumidifier every day for 5 hours, then you’ll spend about 20 pence per day dehumidifying your home.

What should a dehumidifier be set at?

When you have a lot of humidity in your home, you may feel like you need to turn the volume all the way up. However, you can manage the humidity settings on your dehumidifier just like a thermostat with some models. In general, you want to have an RH level or humidity level that is between 30 and 60 percent, but the best humidity percentage is actually between 40 and 50 percent. If you have a setting that is over 75 percent, you are still giving way to mold and mildew that can spread.

What size dehumidifier should you choose?

Most dehumidifiers are compact and lightweight, making them easy to bring from room to room if needed. Brands have a few different dehumidifiers to choose from. Each unit is rated for a different coverage amount in square feet. You will need to pick a dehumidifier that can handle the space’s moisture. However, size can also apply to the capacity in terms of how many pints of moisture you want to remove.

You should measure the square footage of the area that you want to dehumidify. Here is a brief breakdown of sizes and sizes or capacities of dehumidifiers that match.

500 square feet or 46 Square Meters

These spaces can between 10 and 16 pints of moisture depending on how wet the area is. If you are dealing with a lot of molds, water stains, or leaks, then you may want a dehumidifier that can handle multiple pints of moisture per day.

1000 square feet or 92 Square Meters

These spaces need a dehumidifier that can handle between 14 and 23 pints. You may have a basement space or large apartment that requires a larger dehumidifier.

1,500 square feet or 185 Square Meters

A single family home that is a bit on the smaller size could probably handle a large dehumidifier that delivers 18 to 30 pints of moisture.

2000 square feet or 185 Square Meters

In this case, you may want to spread out smaller dehumidifiers. These spaces are likely producing between 22 pints and 37 pints per day of moisture.

2500 square feet or 232 Square Meters

These spaces need a dehumidifier that can remove up to 44 pints of liquid. You may need to have multiple dehumidifiers that are portable as many of the dehumidifiers only have a capacity of 8 litres or 20 litres.

Final Thoughts

With so many dehumidifiers on the market today, there are a lot of people who go for the cheapest without realizing that humidity must be taken out of the air at a proper rate. For example, you want to keep your home between 30% and 50% for the optimal humidity that prevents mold, mildew, condensation, and dampness.

A variety of dehumidifiers can be found online that offer multiple features including low energy savings, customized settings, automatic restart, and automatic shutoff. Of the models removed, there are a few that stand out above the rest for having the best value.

Meaco creates the ultimate dehumidifier line, but there are some other units that have more features and settings to utilize. With portable features, a strong history, and zero recalls, it’s one of the brands that has the most sterling reputation of the bunch.
