We needed to get a dehumidifier as we'd moved in to a new-build property (which take time to fully dry out) and with winter setting in we we're getting loads of condensation on windows. After several months of ignoring the problem and foolishly hoping it would get better on it's own, we discovered loads of patches of mould inside cupboards, on the back of sofas etc. I looked at lots of reviews and saw that this one was the Which? Best Buy - I've always had a lot of success with buying their best buys in the past so I thought I give this one a go. All I can say is - amazing! It sucks so much moisure out of the air - we empty the tank (which is large), every 36-48 hours! It has completely solved our condensation and mould problems. The best feature is that you just plug it in, turn it on and leave it - it turns itself off and on as needed. Apart from emptying the tank you don't have to think about it (and it turns itself off automatically if the tank gets full and you're not there to empty it). The tank emptied really easily - it simply slides out the front - see photo. We live in a 3-bedroom, 1300sqft house, across two floors - we simply leave it in the middle of the landing downstairs, with all the internal doors open on both floors and it services the whole house without ever having to move it. It is heavyish (although I can easily carry it upstairs - I'm only little!) but is on wheels so easily rolls from room to room if you do ever want to move it. It's pricier than many other models but I my view, well worth the money. Top performer!

Worth every penny, i live in a bungalow which is plagued with black mold on ceiling lines especially in the bathroom despite ventilation. We cleaned it all off with black mold remover prior to buying this and not one spec has returned. We bought an Hygrometer just to see what the reading was before switching the Meaco on and it went off the scale, 2 weeks later with this running and we are in the comfort zone. The amount of water this thing pulls out of the air in the first few weeks is shocking and the difference it makes is amazing, no more mold, no more coughing and the heating rarely turns on now the cold damp air has gone which i`m sure will save more money in the long run.So impressed with the results my neighbor has now bought one too, he suffers from COPD and say`s the results after a few weeks are truly miraculous.

A tad noisy but one of the best buys I have made - reducing the need to switch the heating on - its the damp rather than the ambient air temperature that makes cold days feel cold in the house. Also great for drying wet gear (I have a house full of all weather cyclists, a dog that comes in dripping wet, and all my motorcycle kit...and that's beside standard washing). I might just see if I can find a quieter model next time round. On the negative side the push buttons are a one peice plastic film, but the layers have become delaminated on the on off switch so it looks like shrivelled skin when you've been in the bath too long... that's a bit poor IMHO, I have all sorts of other things in the kitchen, microwave that gets far more button pushing and that doesn't suffer from this.

What makes a Dehumidifier Large?

A dehumidifier is large due to its size, weight and larger water extraction capacity.

The best-sized dehumidifier depends on the area and environment it is used in. In a small space, a lower capacity is required. If you’re going to remove moisture from an entire house, you’ll want a larger capacity dehumidifier.

A larger dehumidifier does use more energy than a smaller capacity model, which can increase costs (even with energy efficiency features). However, if you need to remove moisture and reduce humidity levels for an entire home, then a large dehumidifier is an excellent choice.

Why Buy a Large Dehumidifier?

A large dehumidifier is perfect for extracting water and reducing mould in large spaces such as a home or unoccupied property.

The larger water extraction capacity allows larger dehumidifiers to remove moisture from a greater area. Unfortunately, this does mean more energy is needed than a smaller capacity dehumidifier to extract moisture from the air. Even with the energy efficiency features, it would cost more to run a larger capacity dehumidifier than a small model.

Unlike a smaller dehumidifier a larger model requires a designated spot in the home. Usually, larger models take up a lot more space than small models, as they are less compact. So do take this account when you’re looking for a large capacity dehumidifier.

If you do want to move a large dehumidifier around the home, they are less portable than smaller models but can come with casters (wheels) and handles. These features help to move the larger models around a home a lot easier, be careful as they are a lot heavier.

PROS:
  • Great for removing water in larger areas.
  • Extract more water than smaller capacity models.
  • Larger water tanks to hold extracted water.

CONS:
  • Less portable than smaller capacity models.
  • The larger capacity uses a lot more energy.
  • They cost more to run.

Reputed for being one of the best large dehumidifiers on the market, the unit’s easy to understand controls and ability to extract moisture in an efficient manner means that the Meaco 20L has been on the Which? Best Buy list for a number of years.

Being a refrigerant dehumidifier, it is more efficient at home temperatures, although it can still be used at lower temperatures should you need it.

A larger dehumidifier at 39x62x28cm and weighing 13.7kg, it is one of the larger dehumidifiers on the large dehumidifier list, although it does come with wheels for ease of transportation.

Despite its remarkable size, it is relatively quiet compared to other units of the same size, but it can sometimes reach 45dB when on full power, so bear that in mind if you have small children in the home.

With an A+ energy rating, it also happens to be one of the most efficient on the market, which is great if you need to get rid of the mould without spending big.

The unit’s easy to use controls, as already mentioned, are highly respected and lets you access a range of functions within seconds. An automatic timer also means that you can switch the unit off between one to 24 hours.

A continuous drainage feature also means that you don’t have to spend time replacing the trays.

The unit also comes with a HEPA filter, which means that it can help reduce allergens in the home, which is great for those that have asthma, although you will have to buy extra filters separately.

In all, the Meaco 20L is one of the finest dehumidifiers on the market and comes with a range of features. It should be near the top of any shopping list.

This review is based on my having used this product for just one week. The longevity value of this product remains to be seen.My initial experience with this product is nothing less then superb. First, the product arrived quickly and was well packed. It is a very sturdy and attractive dehumidifier and air purifier. I am talking top quality here. It has built in casters and a handle which makes manueuvering quick and easy. Operation is straight foward, easy, and user friendly. In the first day my machine quickly pulled 15 liters of moisture out of my large bedroom with ensuite. That not only proves how well the dehumidifier works but shows just how badly this product was needed.Thank God for the 20 liter tank with automatic shut off.The “smart mode” on this dehumidifier is a perfect setting for normal operations to dehumidify and air purify at a normal healthy levels. It eliminates all manner of damp but ensures it doesn’t dry out the air either. The quick option will suck out a sudden influx of humidity in a hurry. For someone with respitory health issues this product is marvelous. If you have asthma or COPD this product will greatly improve your quality of life. I suffer from both so I speak from experience. The fact that this product includes a very good air purifier that can operate with or independently of the Dehumidifier is a huge bonus. It is the only product like this that performs both functions that I am aware of. Moreover, it performs both functions exceedingly well. This is indeed a pricey product but oh is it ever worth it. One truly gets their money’s worth with this product and then some. I love the large 20 liter tank that is so quick and easy to empty. It also has a tube for those who prefer automatic draining. This is a genuinely top quality product that is second to none. It is arguably the best of the best and I for one am delighted that I bought mine which is in use constantly . I highly recommend this product.

Very pleased, works quietly and efficiently. The electricity bill doesn't seem to have taken a beating either. I bought this to replace an older / budget dehumidifier that packed up after a year. The price isn't cheap but it's definitely value for money. If you have a condensation and / or mould problem then this product will definitely improve that situation for you.

Drops the humidity from 70% to 50% in a few hours.Water tank fills up quickly but I'm pretty sure that's just because there's so much humidity for it to deal with.

Perfect if you need to rid your home of large quantities of moisture, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 has been on the Which? Best Buy list since May 2017.

A compressor model, the unit works better in warmer environments and can extract 20 litres of water every 24 hours at 30°C and 80% humidity, although it will be less efficient below 50°F (10°C).

Suitable for large homes, the unit comes with a three-litre tank, which means you don’t have to empty it frequently. Its continuous drainage feature is also very handy if you have a local low-level drain.

Using only 240 watts to operate, the model is highly efficient, and also comes with a humidistat, energy efficient compressor and a frost watch, all of which help to reduce running costs.

The only aspect of the unit that is average is the noise that it produces, which sits at around 42dB, which is fair when you consider that the unit weighs 14kg and comes in at 42x64x29cm.

Thankfully, the unit also comes with wheels so that you can move it from room to room.

Including a laundry feature, if you need to dry extra loads, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 is a brilliant machine and one that comes with a range of features if you are looking for a dehumidifier the exceeds in versatility.

De’Longhi DDS25 Dehumidifier

A member of the Which? Best Buy list since November 2017, the De’Longhi DDS25 Dehumidifier is a highly regarded dehumidifier and one that can get the job done easily and quickly.

Able to suck 25 litres from the air in a 24 hour period based on 30°C and 80% humidity, the unit can still work well at temperatures as low as 15°C.

Certainly a monster of the domestic league, the DDS25 is one of the largest on the market.

HIghly energy efficient and featuring a range of functions to improve said efficiency, it is certainly a model for those wanting to maintain reasonable energy bills.

Weighing 15kg, it is also one of the heaviest on the market but does come with both wheels and a handle.

A relatively noisy machine, although not able to exceed 50dB, if you’re looking for a quieter model, this one might not be the one for you. That said, if your home is particularly large, you might be able to get away with it.

The DDS25 also comes with anti-bacterial filters, which is great if you’re looking for a machine that can also clean your air while it removes moisture.

Coming with a four-litre tank, it is not a machine that requires constant emptying, although there is also a continuous drainage feature, but you will need to buy a separate drainage kit to use it.

An excellent large dehumidifier by anyone’s standards, the De’Longhi DDS25 is easy to use, efficient and very good at removing water quickly, making it one of the best machines on this list.

The final one on our list of the five best De’Longhi dehumidifiers is the most capable – regarding capacity – of the lot. It’s also the most expensive, but when you have a look at the price difference between this one – at the top of the list – and the least expensive one of our five, the gap isn’t that large.

For this reason, we’re not sure that price will be a clincher when looking at a De’Longhi humidifier, as many other factors come into play to affect your decision.

So far, we have covered a good range of De’Longhi models, most of which have a 2-litre capacity water tank (one with 3-litres) and some with a permanent drain kit, so you don’t have to keep emptying them. This model, the DDS20, features a massive 4.5-litre tank, and that comes in a package that measures just 28x35x49 cm, so not considerably larger than any of the others. There is also the option of the continuous hose attachment, for which you need a handy internal drain.

If you want to use it with the reservoir, you won’t need to empty it that often. The DDS20 can remove as much as 20-litres per day, which is the most significant capacity in our list.

To remove that much moisture per day the DDS20 dehumidifier needs a massive 450 watts of power. We recommend considering this when purchasing this model, as you are going to pay more for it to run on a regular basis. However, remember this dehumidifier is suitable for larger homes (5+ bedrooms) rather than small ones.

The DDS20 measures 15 kg, but this model is not meant to be portable, so this shouldn’t be a problem if you buy it for the purpose it is intended. It does not have an ionizer – a couple of the above models do so if that is important to you check them out – and it comes with the usual 2-year De’Longhi warranty.

There is a lot to recommend this particular dehumidifier for family use. Although there is no dedicated clothes drying system it does have the anti-bacterial filter so is great for asthmatics. However, here is the downside, and it’s one you may have guessed. This is a 450-watt machine, and it may come as no surprise that noise output is no less than 50 dB.

Bearing in mind what we said before – and that the previous loudest was 40 dB – this one is quite clearly going to be a lot louder, so you might want to bear that in mind. As the model is so loud, the DDS20 is not suitable for use in a small flat or house. If you want a machine for a bigger house and have a permanent position where the sound will not affect anyone, then there is no reason this cannot be the best choice.

The DDS20 De’Longhi dehumidifier is an excellent choice for those with larger houses, and a need to remove a lot of moisture from the air efficiently. Just be aware that this model is not designed to be used to dehumidify a flat or small home.

We now have two dehumidifiers running in our apartment pretty much full time, so I'm able to compare this one with the other (a Maeco 20L which is currently on Amazon for £5 more, so very comparable).Firstly, the positives of the De'Longhi:It's good and compact, nice and narrow although I'm not sure how much this really matters when you need to leave ventilation space around them anywayEffective it's undoubtedly pulling a lot of water outDecent fan power to ensure air circulation, the movable louvre also helpsIonisor function (though not that bothered about this personally)Pipe run off so you can drain it rather than keep emptying it outLightweight for something of this capacity.Unfortunately, although very good it's not quite perfect compared to the Maeco:The drain outlet is from a little plug on the bottom of the water tank, the pipe supplied is short and doesn't really fit properly, which is annoying. Also there's a little stopper that goes over the outlet that is bound to get lost, there's nowhere on the machine to store it, and if you lose it then you can no longer use the water tank because it will just drain all over the floor. In comparison the Maeco is much more cleverly designed, the pipe outlet simply bypasses the water tank, so no stoppers required and nothing to lose. The tank is very small for a dehumidifier of this capacity, if you don't connect the drain hose you'll be emptying this a lot!The De'Longhi is also quite loud, partly because of the movable louvre which is a nice option to have, but it's actually noisier than the Maeco which is actually a higher capacity. In summary then - it's good, but could be better.

Having replaced a compressor type of dehumidifier, which we have had for years but recently failed, I was a little apprehensive on buying one of these. However, coupled with the same hygrometer we used previously to measure the humidity levels, this unit seems to be able to maintain a lower level than our other one which was permanently running. The compressor type was also often on a defrost cycle as it struggled with the lower temperatures we are having at the moment.I have noticed that this one can draw more electric when it is in use, but then it can cycle between being on and off more frequently and so might work out to be cheaper. But it is more effective.I do wish that it stored more water in its tray and also it does seem a little more elaborate and difficult to simply empty it over the other one we had - which was more of an open container you simply tipped down the sink. Also it is much noisier than our previous model. When the unit is on and drawing air through it the warmed air it blows out is great from helping washing to dry but also again that noise is quite distracting. Thankfully we do not have it in our living room, if we did we might have been tempted to swap it due to the noise. Also you do have to keep the unit at a distance from walls or other objects, then again we did that with our other one.Overall we are happy with the unit but again be aware tha tit isn't the quietest but it does do the job.

I'm now on my third dehumidifier of this type, the previous two lasted around 2-3 years each, but I would not want to be without this particular model as it is great for drying clothes. I have a tumble dryer but only use it for bedding and towels etc., and find this dehumidifier great for drying clothing on an indoor drying stand. The reason it is so good is the movable vent at the top of the unit which has three options to control the direction of air flow and one of them is perfect when placing the unit in front of the drying stand - the vent will move up and down the stand and you can literally see the clothing drying - much better than units that have a static vent (I tried a Meaco dehumidifier once but it was useless for drying clothes as the vent stayed in the same place). Obviously you need to rotate the clothes so they all get a spot in front of the vent action. An indoor airer full of clothes will dry in an evening with no condensation either. The water reservoir is quite small and once full the unit will automatically switch off. I have no experience of using this unit in other damp conditions but would imagine the reservoir would need frequent emptying

A much quieter model, the DNC65 is one of De’Longhi’s most silent, which is great if you need a machine that operates on low volume.

Able to work at 34dB, the model is also fairly compact at 17x29x47cm and features a two-litre tank, which means that it you’ll need to empty the tank every few hours.

Weighing only 6.5kg, the machine is easy to transport and can happily remove moisture in a room of 55 cubic meters, largely thanks to the three different power levels that you can choose from.

With an eight hour shut off feature, you can also help save on energy bills while utilising its clothes drying and ioniser settings, both of which serve as great bonuses.

For those looking for a middle of the large road dehumidifier, then you should pay particular attention to this unit.
