What are Refrigerant (Compressor) Dehumidifiers?

A refrigerant dehumidifier, also know as a or compressor dehumidifier is a type of dehumidifier available to the domestic market.

The refrigerant dehumidifier works by removing water vapor from the air by passing air over a refrigerated surface. The water vapor then condenses on the cold surface, and the dry air which no longer contains the water vapor is discharged from the unit.

Refrigerant dehumidifiers are one of the most popular types of dehumidifiers in the domestic market. The reason for this is that they are very efficient (energy and water extraction) in warm and humid environments, which are common conditions in UK and US homes.

Why Buy Refrigerant Dehumidifiers?

A refrigerant dehumidifier is a perfect choice if you want to remove moisture from your home.

The refrigerant dehumidifier key advantage over a desiccant dehumidifier is the refrigerant technology it uses. A refrigerant dehumidifier uses less electricity than a desiccant model due to it not using a heating element to dry the absorbing material. This means that this type of dehumidifier uses less energy to remove water vapor from the air.

The only disadvantage of a refrigerant dehumidifier model is that it is less efficient in temperatures below 10°C (50°F). This is because the refrigerant device used in the dehumidifier requires the air temperature in the room to be warmer than the temperature in the unit. The colder the temperature inside the room, the colder the refrigerant device becomes. If the temperature drops below 10°C (50°F), then ice begins to form in the dehumidifier which impacts on the efficiency of the unit, as it needs to stop and spend time deicing the dehumidifier.

PROS:
  • Use less energy than a desiccant dehumidifier.
  • Excellent at extracting water above 10°C (50°F).
  • Cost less to run than a desiccant dehumidifier.
  • Great for heated homes.
CONS:
  • Very inefficient below 10°C (50°F).

If you want to remove moisture or reduce mold in your heated home then refrigerant (compressor) dehumidifiers are an ideal choice.

PROS
  • Excellent water extraction
  • Quiet
  • Energy efficient
  • Impressive array of features
CONS
  • Takes up space

An efficient dehumidifier in warmer temperatures, it is built for domestic use and has featured on the Which? Best Buy list for a number of years.

Although the Meaco 20L is, in fact, a refrigerant dehumidifier, it is also useful at lower temperatures, meaning that it can also be used in garages, basements, and conservatories.

One of the larger appliances on the list, it measures 36x62x29cm and weighs 13.7kg, which means that it is one of the heavier dehumidifiers on the list, which could be an issue if you have a smaller home.

Although it is relatively quiet compared to other machines on this list, it can still reach 45dB, which is something else that you might want to bear in mind.

That said, it is highly efficient and comes with an A+ energy rating, which is great if you’re concerned about bills and want a more cost-effective method for removing mould from your home.

With a variety of great features, the touch controls and digital display are straightforward to use, and you can set the machine to sleep for up to 24 hours so that you can get on with your everyday life.

Although it is equipped with a decent sized tank, there is also a continuous drainage feature, so you don’t have to replace the trays every few hours.

An added bonus is also the HEPA filter, which can help to reduce allergens in the air, although you’ll have to buy extra ones separately.

We have no doubt that the Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier is one of the best large refrigerant dehumidifiers on the market and has an impressive range of features, all of which are easy to use.

A refrigerant (or compressor) model, this dehumidifier works better in warmer and humid environments, which make it perfect for UK or US heated homes. The model claims to extract 20-litres of water from the air, but this is based on 30°C and 80% humidity over a 24-hour period. Despite this, the dehumidifier still extracts a lot of water from the air, but like most refrigerant models it becomes less efficient below 10°C (50°F).

The capacity of this Electriq dehumidifier model would suit a 5-bed house.

It has a 3-litre water tank, which is large but with the model has a large capacity for extracting water from the air, which may mean you will frequently be emptying the water tank if it’s left on over 24 hour period. Luckily, this model comes with a continuous drainage feature for those who have a local low-level drain, reducing the need to empty the water tank continually.

Regarding the energy efficiency of the model, it uses a maximum of 240 watts which is low compared to other dehumidifiers with the same capacity on the market. It also comes with many energy reducing features, including a humidistat, energy efficient compressor and frost watch, which are designed to reduce costs of running the model.

The Electriq CD20LE-V2 dehumidifier noise level when it is on is about average when compared to other models on this list (42dB). There are models which have higher noise levels when they are on. Still, be aware that this Electriq model may irritate those who pick up on noisy electrical appliances in the home.

Concerning the size of the dehumidifier, it is not as compact as other dehumidifiers on the market. This dehumidifier weighs 14 kg and is 42 x 64 x 29 cm in size, which doesn’t make it the most compact or portable model. It does come with casters (wheels) and a handle which will make it easier to move around the house.

Just like many dehumidifiers on this list, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 comes with a variety of helpful features. For example, this model comes with a laundry mode to dry clothes for those who do not have a tumble dryer in their home.

To conclude, the Electriq CD20LE-V2 dehumidifier is an excellent choice for those who want to extract moisture quickly from a large heated home.

PROS
  • Great water extraction at room temperature
  • Efficient in cold temperatures
  • Very energy efficient
  • Easy to use
CONS
  • Noisy
  • Bulky

If you live in the UK however, it’s worth noting that it will extract less water from the air at lower temperatures, but can still suck 11 litres from the air between 15-20ºC over the same amount of time.

Featuring a unique DC Motor, the unit is made even more energy efficient to run and has been applauded by experts around the world.

Another unique feature is that it is also designed to dry clothes, and with its DC motor, it’s very economical to run, even compared to other Meaco dehumidifiers.

A slight downside, however, is the noise. Although it has four different fan speeds, it can still reach 50dB, which can be annoying if you’re in the same room. Even on a lighter setting, it can still reach 43dB.

A bulky unit at 38x29x64cm, the model, is also fairly heavy at 15kg, although it does come with wheels if you want to move it around the house.

Like other Meaco dehumidifiers, it also comes with a range of handy features including a filter and ioniser, alongside an easy to use Meaco control logic interface, where you can control the auto restart function.

A very handy feature is also the child lock, which is very good for those that have little ones running around the house.

Indeed, the Meaco 25L Low Energy Dehumidifier is certainly worth investigating further if you’re looking for an energy efficient model that can work away in a house that doesn’t mind the noise.

PROS
  • Excellent overall humidity control

CONS
  • Not fantastic at pulling water from the air at low temperatures

It’s a 20-litre capacity dehumidifier, which is one of the largest dehumidifiers on the domestic market. This type of model is well suited to drying out a large home or very damp unoccupied property.

This type of dehumidifier, a refrigerant or otherwise known as a compressor model, it suited to warmer homes with higher humidities. It’s ideal for anyone in the UK or US wanting to buy a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in the air and mould from their home.

Weighing 13.3 kg this model is not light or as portable as other refrigerant dehumidifiers. Its dimensions (37x51x22 cm) are typical for a model which has this capacity. Just like many large dehumidifiers, this Dimplex model comes with casters and a handle, making it easier to move around the home.

This particular dehumidifier uses a maximum of 240 watts of energy to run, which is one of the smallest on this list. It is also very energy efficient when looking at the amount of water extracted compared to the amount of energy used. A variety of features also help to reduce energy costs, which include auto shut off and a timer.

The Dimplex DXDH20N model has one fan setting speed, and its maximum noise level is 47dBA. When compared to other units in on this list this particular dehumidifier’s noise level is louder. We’d recommend making sure taking this into account before buying this model as there are quieter 20-litre capacity dehumidifiers on the market.

Concerning the features of the Dimplex DXDH20N model, there are a lot less than other brands. Despite this, it comes with essential modes such as the continuous drain option and a timer and auto shut off function.

In summary, the Dimplex DXDH20N dehumidifier is an excellent refrigerant model which efficiently extracts water from heated homes. It is noisier than other 20-litre capacity models, so for those who get irritated by the sound, this might be a problem.
